At the European football championships an incident in Turkey's round-of-16 clash against Austria has unleashed a diplomatic storm here in Germany. The German foreign office has summoned Turkey’s ambassador. This comes after a Turkish footballer sparked outrage by using the so-called 'wolf salute'. The hand gesture is associated with a Turkish far-right organization that Germany characterizes as nationalist-extremist, anti-semitic, and racist.

As Russia's war on Ukraine rages on, it stands to gain trillions of dollars in mineral and resources if it takes over the country — or even just hangs on to territory it has seized so far. Ukraine has huge deposits of lithium, in particular, a key mineral for batteries powering electric cars or smartphones.

After a period of anti-government protests in Armenia’s Tavush region, the sound of border construction is now heard again. In May, residents in Kirants village, bordering Azerbaijan, took to the streets to protest Yerevan’s border delimitation and demarcation process, which includes the handing over of vital roads, bridges, and farmland to Azerbaijan. The demarcation has already split part of Kirants village and has led to the evacuation of a number of residents. CivilNet is in the region to understand the impact of this process on people.

The newly elected EU Council President, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban visited Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow to discuss the war in Ukraine which caused major outrage among his fellow European Union leaders. At a press conference with Putin in Moscow, Orban said Hungary viewed its six-month stint holding the rotating European Council presidency as a peace mission. "Many steps are needed to end the war, but we took the first step to restore dialogue," Orban said, adding that "points of view remained far from each other in Kyiv and Moscow." The Hungarian PM also visited Kyiv, for the first time since Russia's invasion, earlier in the week.
