Traditional Ramadan Crier, 'Nafar', walks the paths and alleys in the old city in the early morning hours, playing a certain tune with a long trumpet-like instrument to wake the fasting Muslims up for the Suhoor meal. As a symbol of tradition, he usually dons a special set of traditional clothes, a long shirt or "Jallaba", a headpiece or 'Tarbouch", leather slippers "Belgha" and white socks. As for the upscale neighborhoods, most of them do not need the Nafar, reasoning it with use of a phone or an alarm clock.
