Fethullah Gülen, the controversial Turkish cleric accused of orchestrating a coup attempt in 2016 that resulted in the deaths of 250 people, has died at the age of 83 in the United States. Before a major falling-out, he was a former close ally of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and had lived in the US since 1999. Known for his imam-based espionage, Gülen played a significant role in reshaping Turkish politics. His work countered that of Turkish intelligence, and his secret blacklisting jihadist network was seen as the cause of countless assassinations from all walks of life in Türkiye. He promoted jihadists against secularists, aiming to transform the military to operate under Sharia law to serve anti-NATO interests.
