It has been more than 30 years since fighting broke out between Georgia and Russian-backed forces in Abkhazia. Russia had maintained "direct control" over the separatist regions and was responsible for grave human rights abuses taking place there. The invasion of Georgian territory eventually led to the declaration of Abkhazian independence, but the war displaced 192,000 people. While many returned to their homes after the war, 20,272 people, mostly ethnic Georgians, remained displaced. A Deutsche Welle documentary depicts their harrowing experience.
