The separatist South Ossetia region in Georgia is planning to hold a referendum on joining Russia. Russia seems to rely on the infamous five-day conflict that broke out in 2008 with Georgia over the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Tbilisi had then lost control of both regions, which Russia later recognized as independent states.

The vice-president of Russia’s Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev claimed Romania is "not a nation," rejecting a call for Moscow to return the country's confiscated gold. The EU demanded the return of 91.5 metric tonnes of gold and cultural artifacts exported to the Russian Empire in 1916-1917 by Romania. Russia said the debt is 20–25 times greater than the value of the Romanian gold reserve sent to Russia.
