With around 400 chronically ill survivors left of the 1988 attack, the Halabja Massacre that put an end to the Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988) is remembered as the brutal aggression of Saddam Hussien, his having rained down a lethal cocktail of chemical weapons on the city of Halabja on 16 March 1988, killing at least 5,000 people, mostly women, and children, and wounding tens of thousands.
