In February 2014, anonymous pro-Russian militants seized public buildings in Crimea. On 16 March 2014, the illegal referendum in Crimea, organized at Russian gunpoint, set off a spiral of violence leading to Crimea’s illegal annexation by Russia two days later and a template for the invasion of the newly occupied parts of Ukraine.
Two years after the illegal annexation of Crimea to Russia, Crimean Tatar singer Jamala participated in and won the Eurovision Song Contest under the Ukrainian banner with her song '1944'. The song resonated with the pain of the three-day deportation on 18–20 May 1944, during which Russian agents had gone house to house collecting Crimean Tatars at gunpoint and had forced them to travel with sealed-off cattle trains to be transferred almost 2,000 miles to remote locations in the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic.
