The remains of 14 victims of the 1995 Srebrenica genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina have been laid to rest as thousands of people commemorate the anniversary two months after the United Nations established an annual day of remembrance.
Twenty-nine years ago, more than 8,000 men and boys, mostly Muslim, were taken from a Bosnian town that was supposed to be a safe haven - and never seen again. They were murdered by Bosnia-Serb forces in what we know now as the Srebrenica genocide. July 11th has been designated by the United Nations, as the day to remember the event that shocked the world and brought into question the ability of UN peacekeepers to protect civilians.
When 12-year-old Izudin Alic came to face-to-face with an unknown man who offered him a chocolate bar, little did he know the incident would later lead to the death of his father — along with at least 8,000 more Muslim men and boys during the Srebrenica genocide in 1995. July 11th has been designated by the United Nations, as the day to remember the event that shocked the world and brought into question the ability of UN peacekeepers to protect civilians.
