The Libyan coast guard is accused by a German NGO of having caused the death of an illegal migrant. The incident took place when a group of illegal migrants on three unseaworthy boats were bound for Europe but was halted by the Libyan coast guard and saved by 'SOS Humanity', a German NGO operating as a search and rescue organization in the Mediterranean. The NGO later disembarked 77 migrants in the southern Italian port of Crotone but also reported on the Libyan coast guard's intervention as “life-threatening”, claiming that their firing of real bullets into the water had caused at least one migrant to drown.
